Matthew Todd is a multi award winning writer and sometime performer, and was editor of the UK’s best selling gay magazine, Attitude, for 8 years, where he interviewed countless celebrities including Madonna, Elton John and Lady Gaga and was responsible for Prince William’s first gay press appearance.
His first play,BLOWING WHISTLES, has been produced in the UK and Australia; most notably at the Leicester Square Theatre in 2008 where Whatsonstage.com called it ‘the brightest gay play in ages’. Mark Shenton in The Stage said ‘Not since Larry Kramer shone a blazingly self-critical eye on the gay lifestyle has a playwright dared to confront such issues so directly’.

His first book, Straight Jacket (Bantam Press), about LGBT mental health, was described as ‘utterly brilliant’ by Owen Jones in The Guardian, ‘one of the most powerful books I have ever read’ by Lord Michael Cashman and ‘an essential read for every gay person on the planet’ by Sir Elton John, as well as ‘life saving’ and ‘game changing’ by readers. It was voted Best LGBT Book 2017 by readers of Boyz magazine.
His second book, Pride: The Story of the LGBT Equality Movement, was published in 2019 by Welbeck Publishing and has been published in France, Taiwan and the US.
Awards include Stonewall Journalist of the Year 2011, British Society of Magazine Editors Editor of the Year (Men’s) 2011 and 2015 and Scoop of the Year 2016 (for his Prince William cover), and an Attitude Pride Award 2017. He was awarded the Freedom of the City of London in 2017 for services to the LGBT community.
